Lesson 4 - Phosphorous Cycle

Phosphorus is another important element in several biological molecules. DNA and RNA have phosphorus in them, and animals incorporate phosphorus into their shells, bones and teeth. All cells are surrounded by a selectively permeable membrane made of phospholipids. Phosphorus does not have a gaseous atmospheric form. It originates from the weathering of sedimentary and metamorphic bedrock in the Earth's crust. Phosphate ions can dissolve in water, and that is how they get into the food chain. Producers absorb the phosphate ions and make them available to other organisms.

1. We have read in your textbook, and also discussed how humans can add phosphorus to ecosystems. Research one way that humans add phosphorus to ecosystems and the effects that has on the ecosystem. Create a Power Point or use ahead.com to describe what you have found out. You can do your research on the internet. Use at least two search engines to find reliable sources. Be sure you include a bibliography, and tell why you believe that is a reliable source. Provide a link or embed your work on your wikispace page.

2. Homework- Do questions 1-7, 11 on page 100 of your Science Probe 10 textbook. If you have internet access at home, you can write your answers on your wikispace page.
